Welcome to the Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School
Literary Arts Magazine!
This year's magazine theme is focused upon our surroundings.
Humans are creatures of habit. We like to do things in certain ways, become friendly with certain people, eat certain foods, and we - for the most part - like to stick with our routines. Some of us are more spontaneous and open than others, but I am willing to bet that not any of us has ever examined one hundred percent of our surroundings every minute, of every day. Why? Because it is impossible to do so. It is impossible to view and interpret everything that we cross paths with. So what is it that you and I have been focusing upon all these years? Well, essentially, we choose to examine only what we are drawn to, to what our eyes set their gaze upon. We are drawn to certain sights, foods, friends that match our likes. But for this reason, all of us - you and me both - are missing out on everyday experiences because we aren't truly giving life our full attention. If we take a breather to pause on our walks into school, or our car rides around town, we might notice things we never have seen before or never thought to look at. A new flower, a different path on the road, new people to meet, a unique book in the library. We might notice how certain aspects of life that once seemed hidden were in front of us, right before our very eyes, this whole time. Many of the writing pieces below are focused upon our surroundings - aspects of life that we may never have noticed if we had not taken a minute to slow down and pause our fast-paced movements.
